Effective from 30 September 2023
In an effort to ensure fair compensation for foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong, the government has announced updates to the Minimum Allowable Wage (MAW) and Food Allowance, effective from 30 September 2023.
Minimum Allowable Wage (MAW)
The new Minimum Allowable Wage for foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong is HK$4,870 per month.
This updated MAW rate applies to all employment contracts signed on or after 30 September 2023. Employers hiring foreign domestic helpers must ensure the monthly salary meets or exceeds this new minimum standard.
Food Allowance
In addition to the minimum wage, the government has also adjusted the Food Allowance for foreign domestic helpers.
The new Food Allowance is set at HK$1,236 per month.
Employers have the flexibility to either:
·     Provide food for the domestic helper
·     Pay the monthly food allowance of HK$1,236
The choice between providing food or paying the allowance should be mutually agreed upon between the employer and the domestic helper, and clearly outlined in the employment contract.
